Simon Oliver was born in Surrey. He attended school in Croydon and lived in Warlingham until, as a young man he travelled widely in Europe before moving to Cornwall to live and work within the art colony of St. Ives.

As a boy, he would carve the chalkstone from the Surrey Downs, the Yew and Beech from the local woodland but in Cornwall he concentrated on the indigenous rocks, from the iron-hard blue Elvan and granite of St.Ives to the softer serpentine of the Lizard peninsula.

He enjoys the challenge of allowing the character of the individual stones to express themselves whilst manipulating their essential nature in order to carve his original and hand-made images.

Recently Simon has moved back to Surrey and is actively pursuing his passion for mural painting and is currently accepting commissions in London, Surrey and abroad. He loves to use the optical illusion technique of Trompe L'Oeil in his work to create extra dimension and the dream-like qualities of fantasy and atmosphere.
